Get To Know The Healthy Spine And The Deformed Spine

One of the most complex regions of the human body is the spine, which consists of a chain of bones known as vertebrae. One vertebra is separated from the next through a flat disc. This disc ensures that two vertebrae don’t collide with each other. All the nerves in the body run along the spine and emerge from it. It is tendons, soft tissue, and ligaments that surround the backbone that keeps it flexible and allows us to move around.

The healthy position of the spine has a slight curve when you see it from the side. This shows that it is flexible. When you see the spine from the back, the spine appears to be a straight line moving from the neck till the lower back.

What Are The Common Deformities Of The Spine?

In some people, the curve of the spine becomes very prominent, leading to a deformity. Here are the three most common types:

  • When the backbone of a person curves inwards more than average at the lower back portion, it leads to Lordosis, which is also known as swayback.
  • When the upper portion of the spine is rounded more than usual, it is known as Kyphosis. In severe cases, the curvature can be as much as 50 degrees.
  • When the curve of the spine is sideways, it is known as Scoliosis. In this case, the curvature can be C-shaped or S-shaped.

What Causes A Spine Deformity?

The reason for a spinal deformity can vary widely. Some of them are congenital, meaning they are present since the birth of the person. An example is spina bifida, which is a birth defect. Genetic factors, a family member with spine ailments, is one more reason. Spinal infections and tumours can cause deformity.

An injury during childhood or development stage is also probable cause. Wrong postures like slouching or obesity are two more things that lead to spinal deformity. They may also occur due to an unknown reason. Such spinal deformities are idiopathic.
