What Is Post-Surgery Rehabilitation And Where Is Done?

What Is Post-Surgery Rehabilitation And Where Is Done?

Post-surgery rehabilitation is a specialized branch of medicine that helps patients regain function in their body after surgery. The surgery itself is needed after an injury or a medical condition. Physical medicine and rehabilitation generally encompass a whole team of healthcare practitioners, not merely one doctor.

What Does Physical Rehabilitation Do?

Rehabilitation after surgery or an injury helps a person recover bodily functions such as:

  • Bowel problems
  • Bladder issues
  • Chewing food
  • Speech-Language
  • Movement of body parts
  • Mobility of the entire body
  • Swallowing
  • Thinking and reasoning issues

When Is Physical Rehabilitation Required In Adults?

Post-surgery rehabilitation is necessary after a major operation that hinders the function of the body. It may also be required after a sports injury or road accident. Besides accidents that cause damage, certain medical conditions also demand physical rehabilitation. They are:

  • Many brain and spinal injuries.
  • Arthritis in its severe form that worsens with time.
  • Several brain disorders like cerebral palsy, stroke and multiple sclerosis.
  • Recovery after a grave illness like a heart or respiratory failure or infection.
  • Any chronic pain, i.e., that lasts for a long-term such as in the back and neck.

When Is Rehabilitation Necessary In Children?

Conditions that adversely affect a child’s ability to function require physical rehabilitation. A handful of them are:

  • Any genetic disorders such as Down Syndrome.
  • Neuromuscular disorders such as muscular dystrophy.
  • Any intellectual disability.
  • Language issues and speech disorders.
  • Development conditions such as autism spectrum disorder.
  • Sensory deprivation disorder.

Surgeries of the bone and joints, such as those required after high-degree burns and limb amputation, also necessitate post-surgery rehabilitation.

Where Can Rehabilitation Be Done?

Rehabilitation can be conducted in several settings. Typically, the first phase of recovery begins in a hospital when the patient is just recovering from an injury, surgery or illness. In a few cases, rehabilitation is started even before surgery is planned and performed.

Once the individual is strong enough to leave the hospital, then post-surgery rehabilitation is shifted to a specialised inpatient centre like HAMSA Rehab in Chennai. A medical rehabilitation centre becomes necessary when:

  • There is a spinal cord injury.
  • There is a severe brain injury, either from trauma or from a stroke.
  • There are orthopaedic problems.
  • Burn treatment is needed.

Besides a rehabilitation centre, post-surgery rehab can also take place in a skilled nursing facility. Irrespective of where the medical rehabilitation occurs, the recovering patient finally goes home, where the therapy is continued on an intermittent basis.
The person can either visit the office of their healthcare provider for the therapy, or the therapist can visit the patient’s home. At this stage, it is crucial for family members and other caregivers to provide support and help to the recovering person.

What Makes A Rehabilitation Team?
Rehabilitation requires a team approach. Instead of a single doctor, a team of health care professionals work alongside caregivers to help the patient. The doctors who are qualified to give physical medicine and rehabilitation receive at least 4 years of training in the field after completing medical school. They are known as physiatrists.
Besides physiatrists, a post-surgery rehab team may include:

  • Nurses
  • Nutritionists
  • Neurologists
  • Psychologists
  • Physical therapists
  • Primary care doctor
  • Orthopaedic surgeons
  • Vocational counsellors
  • Occupational therapists
  • Speech and language therapists

How Is Rehabilitation Done?
At our Medical Rehabilitation Centre in Chennai, our rehab experts first evaluate an individual’s problem and then plan their recovery. During the therapy, they constantly monitor progress and make changes when required. Besides a full rehabilitation program and treatment plan, for all our Chennai patients, we provide social, emotional and work-related support.
For instance, we provide recommendations on how to make the home safer and more functional for the patient. The rehab centre also aids with medical equipment like wheelchairs and splints. Lastly, to the family and other caregivers of the patient, we help find resources that make adjusting to their loved one’s condition easier.

Be Safe, Take Help
Since 2000 the road length in India has increased only by 39%. In comparison, vehicles have increased by a gigantic 158%. The constant rise of automobiles has led to greater congestion and more accidents. Tamil Nadu alone sees 100 accidents/ lakh persons every year. That’s the third-highest in the country. Given that Chennai is the capital of the state, it contributes massively to the number.
As rehabilitation experts, we advise staying safe on the roads. And in case, you or your loved ones meet an unfortunate incident, take medical help.
