Tired Of Constant Back Pain? Blame Your Shoes!

Home Gait Training

26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, ligaments and tendons make up the human foot and are considered one of the greatest engineering marvels by nature. Yet, we tend to take them for granted and not pay attention to the shoes we wear, which often leads to pain.

How Do Feet Work?

The front part of the feet and the toes act like a lever. It allows us to compress the portion and walk or break into a run. The back part of the feet, i.e., the heel and the arch, act as shock absorbers when you run, jump or walk.

How Can Feet Cause Back Pain?

The act of walking, running, or jumping is not limited to the feet. All movement of the body is regulated by a chain of parts which include:

  • Head
  • Neck
  • Back
  • Hips
  • Legs

Together they keep the body balance and gait proper. Because all of them are connected, an imbalance in even one of these parts can cause pain in another. It is why the wrong type of footwear can lead to back pain. High heels are not recommended for long use during the day. It alters the curvature of the spine and causes low back pain. High heels can be worn for special occasions and short term use.

How Do Wrong Shoes Cause Back Pain?

There are three ways the wrong footwear can result in back pain:

  • If the design of the shoes is poor, it fails to provide proper support to the feet. It can either compress it or offer insufficient support to the natural arch. In such cases, pain in the leg and back arises over time.
  • An incorrect shoe takes away the ability of the feet to absorb shock. This triggers intense pain in both lower back and hips. In some instances, it can even fracture the hip bone or lead to a slipped disc.

Shoes with long heels or wrong design push the pelvis forward and the hips backward. This posture can trigger irregular menses.

How To Pick The Correct Type Of Footwear To Lessen Back Pain?

The first step is to select shoes that have at least some cushioning inside. This lessens the shock to your feet. The second is to get rid of all high heels. The recommended heal size is one inch. Anything above two inches should be avoided. If that is not possible, then restrict their wear as much as possible. Some other tips for choosing the correct footwear are:

  • Replace shoes often because constant wear tears the cushioning inside them.
  • When buying shoes, make sure they are neither too tight or loose. The wrong fit affects your gait. So, they have to be comfortable.
  • Absolutely flat shoes are not always the right choice. Shoes must offer some natural support to your arch. A well-designed flat will have it.

If you have been suffering from back pain for a long time, it may be time to consult a doctor.
