Know About Meniere’s Disease
Meniere’s disease is a disorder of the inner ear characterized by hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo. In most cases, it is slowly progressive and significantly impacts the social functioning of the affected individual.
Hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo are all common symptomatic complaints with numerous potential causes, yet true Meniere disease is quite rare and fundamentally a diagnosis of exclusion.
Science Behind Meniere’s Disease
An increase in endolymphatic fluid within the inner ear causes distension of the membranous tissue.
Is There a Cure?
No known cure exists for Meniere’s Disease. Effective management often requires a collaborative approach involving ENT specialists, audiologists, physiotherapists, dietitians, and psychologists.
Is Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) Effective?
Yes, VRT is beneficial in managing balance issues associated with Meniere’s disease.
Customized Balance Training: Tailored exercises to help retrain the balance system by inducing controlled dizziness and gradually improving stability.
Regular Exercise: Engage in low-impact activities to enhance circulation and balance, but avoid overexertion.
Are Lifestyle Changes Beneficial?
Dietary Adjustments: Reduce salt intake (1,500–2,000 mg daily) to minimize inner ear fluid retention. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco, as they can exacerbate symptoms.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water to maintain fluid balance in the body.
Stress Management: Practice meditation, deep breathing, and relaxation techniques to alleviate stress, which can trigger episodes.
Consistent Sleep Schedule: Maintain a regular sleep routine to support overall health and reduce fatigue.
Avoid Triggers: Bright lights, loud noises, and sudden movements can aggravate symptoms — pay attention to what affects you.
