An intertrochanteric fracture is a break in the femur that occurs in the region between the greater and lesser trochanter. The trochanters are part of the femur that serve as attachment points for muscles involved in hip movement. These fractures are typically the result of a fall, particularly in older individuals whose bones have become more fragile with age.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is often recommended shortly after surgery to help the patient regain strength and mobility in the affected leg.
Exercises may focus on:
- Improving range of motion
- Strengthening muscles around the hip
- Restoring walking ability
- Preventing complications like blood clots or muscle atrophy
Pain Management
Pain management after surgery is essential for a successful recovery. This may include prescribed medications, ice packs, and elevation to reduce swelling.
