HAMSA is an initiative spearheaded by one of Chennai’s renowned spine and neurosurgeon, Dr. G.Balamurali with an aim, to provide quality rehab for patients. With his 17 + years of experience in UK and India, he understands the challenges faced by such people, from health, environment to social reasons and believes that it requires right interventions to overcome the struggle. He believes that it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to create a smooth, accessible and healthy future for them.
International day of disabled persons is celebrated worldwide on 3rd of December every year and is promoted as an international observance by the United Nations from 1992. The day is celebrated every year in order to promote awareness about people with disabilities as well as to encourage them, to enhance their way of life and remove the social stigma towards them.
The Figures That Point To The Necessity Of A Rehab
According to 2001 census, over 21 million people in India are suffering from one or the other kind of disability. This is equivalent to 2.1% of the population. Among the total disabled in the country, 12.6 million are males and 9.3 million are females. The country’s disabled population has increased by 22.4% between 2001 and 2011. According to the 2014 census, India has 20.42 lakh disabled children aged between 0 and 6 years. Around 71% of them – 14.52 lakh children – are in rural areas. There are 5.9 lakh disabled children in cities.

HAMSA has organized a one-day Free clinic in its centre on 3rd December to celebrate “International Day of Disabled Persons” and to create a future where people are not excluded because of their disability. Additionally, HAMSA trust – an exclusive trust has been set up as part of HAMSA rehab to provide free treatment to the underprivileged.
